Cal and I have a new webserial!

MARKED follows the story of Nilien, a Wild Rune in an era where most Runes are created in the safety of the Academy.

But you can do more than follow, you can participate! Daily updates each lead to new polls where readers can decide names, details, and even what Nilien decides to do next!

Reading and voting is free, but pledging MARKED's Patreon gets you all kinds of extra content, from character bios to an in-world newsletter.

We just started last week, so it's still easy to get caught up!

Check it out~

I'm selling a number of 3000-word (and potentially longer!) short science fiction/fantasy stories or scenes, inspired by prompts, for $30 each. These funded scenes will become part of the Shared Worlds canon, and the first ten purchased scenes will each be accompanied by a sketch by Oakland-area artist Davin Yant. The purchaser will receive the original sketch on a postcard.

This will raise funds for the Foundations educational system, a San Francisco Bay Area group focused on community-building, personal development, education, and safety within the Alternative Sexuality and Diverse Genders and Sexualities communities.

Read more and purchase a prompt here!

I had a lot of fun with the Shared Worlds prompt call when I did it, and I'm looking forward to what will come from this fundraiser.

[ profile] mizkit, a professional author I like who has run a couple of successful crowdfunding campaigns, has another running right now. Her LJ post today about the author's side of things seemed like it might be of interest to the group. How hard do you push? How do you get the word out to those who might be interested without driving others away? Questions without clear answers.

(The current project, The Redeemer Chronicles, is for a novel described as a cross between Rosie the Riveter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's an ensemble cast urban fantasy centered on a WWII-era pinup girl. With some socio-economic subtext thrown in.)

So: I recently finished Whose Love Follows Still, a somewhere-in-the-neighborhood-of-15k-words-long story based on Norse mythology. My current audience is too small for ransom-model funding to be fair to early sponsors. For that and a few other reasons, this story is free if you want, pay if you like. Did you want genderless shapeshifters and their social mores? Or sappy mother-child relationships? Or slightly twisted humor? Or Thor and Loki? Or adventures in Hawaii-at-Iceland's-latitude (i.e., lazily-worldbuilt Jotunheim)? Because all of those are in this story, all of which is available right now, for free unless you choose otherwise.

Those of you who read June's round up will know that I was going to try something I wasn't sure I was going to be capable of - writing 150,000 words in a month. Last time I did NaNoWriMo I did complete it in nine days, so I knew, theoretically, it was possible, but that didn't mean I would be able to do it. Especially as day care has been getting busier and busier. My total word count at the time I went to bed was 177,445, which included 80,000 words posted here, 20,000 words posted at Patreon, 25,000 for the novellas, and all of the adoption/rental stories that I owed people. Of course now that I've found that 150,000 words is actually rather easy I want to challenge myself again, so I'm thinking of attempting 200,000 words in November, although I am going to wait and see what happens before then before I make a decision.

Yesterday I spent most of the day posting. This is something I won't be doing again, but I found myself putting off the majority of that job until the end of the month, which meant I ended up posting, I think, about 25,000 words of fiction. I did realise there are several stories that need renaming, do I'll be doing that at some point this month, as well as working on getting the collections that aren't yet sorted all nice and easy to read. I will be having a couple of days off, first, though, to do some other things that need doing. The plan for tomorrow is to have a nice sort out of our room, as James has some time off and will be using it to work on the car, because I want to get everything in order. Our work/sleep schedules aren't great for getting things done sometimes.

Next month will be quieter. I'm still going to be posting 20,000 words of exclusive fiction to Patreon and 40,000 words of fiction here, not including Case - with the focus being Thear and the Magi.

Due to other commitments June, sadly, became a month when I got very little writing done. I did complete a ghostwriting job of 30,000 words, which I completed at the beginning of the month, and it reminded me once again how much I actually like ghostwriting, so if you have any ghostwriting you might like done please let me know. As I'm sure is obvious my speciality is speculative fiction, but for this job I was writing erotica and it was great fun, so I am open to pretty much anything. If you send me an email or use one of the contact forms I have at the site I'll send you a no obligation quote and then if you do decide to use me I'm also willing to work out payment schedules, because I know that paying for something like having a story written isn't always easy to afford. I also offer commissions in my own worlds, so literally what you could do is say you want a 30,000 word novella set on Gaelom involved a character called John and I'll write that for you. Basically I will write anything for anyone, because I love to write and the more of it I can do the happier I am.

So, with this in mind, I have some plans for both July and the rest of the year, which are me attempting to be sensible, although I think I'm failing. As I posted so little in June I want to post the word count for both months, so that's 80,000 words, with half of that being purely continuations and the rest being for the World Walkers and Fae World collections, so that may include new stuff as well as continuations, as well as posting 20,000 words exclusively to Patreon. I'm not sure which collections the stories will be for, but I'm aiming to post at least 5,000 words a week there, which may be split or it may not. That depends on how the stories work best. I also want to make a start on at least one of my planned novellas and I have a story bundle to work on, which is a gift for a friend. The novellas are older stories that I've wanted to work on for a while that don't work with any of my other collections and I don't really want to add any more right now, but I do want to write the stories, so novellas it is. Actually, thinking about it, I might switch to writing novellas for the Inquisition as well, rather than not really working on it at all, because there is very little interest in that collection. For now though I'll be working on three series of novellas, with the aim being to have three 30,000 word novellas completed for each of them by the end of the year: my demon assassins series, my sleeping world series, and my 'ships series. Then I want to have written five 6 story story bundles, three 12 story story bundles, two 18 story story bundles, 5 bonus stories for Case of the Counterfeit Enchantments, and five introductory ebooks. Honestly it looks more than it is for someone like me, because I do write a lot, but the issue for me is feedback. Writing is easier for me if I know I have people interested in what I do, so comments are always appreciated and the more I get the more I'll write. Income also helps, because if someone is willing to put some money into the tip jar I know they're enjoying what they're reading.

So that's the plan. I have no idea if it will work out, but it's really what I want to do and I know it's something I'm capable of, as long as I focus.

I have opened up feedback on my two potential upcoming serials:

Working-joke-title Steam!Goats (A steampunk setting in a universe featuring goats as a primary mode of transportation) - A boarding-school story involving steam, magic, and teenagers.
Question post here.

Working-joke-title With a Gladiator on Top (A kink setting still very up in the air)
Question Post here

The questions, in short:
What are the top three things you'd like to see in such a serial?

What would you LEAST want to see in that story?

What setting would you like for such a story?

Ever since I started crowdfunding I've tried to be a little different to the rest. The market I entered is competitive, so if I want to earn a living I know that I need to be. Fortunately I've been lucky enough to find myself helping out with the doggy day care that my landlords run, which means that I can take my time once more to get people interested in what I do, rather than being total focused on trying to make my website profitable right now. (James has his CT scan on the 29th and should get his results on the 6th of September, which might mean we find out more about what's causing his painful medical issue or it could be utterly pointless. With all these tests I feel very lucky that the NHS does exist, even though it isn't perfect, because I dread to think how much all the tests, appointments, and pills would have cost in the US.)

With my new aim in mind I'd like to offer free character adoptions and setting rentals to anyone who's interested, even if you've already had a freebie (although I'd prefer it if you could go for a different character or setting than you had before), and if you signal boost this offer publicly or to someone you think might be interested you can double the word count, add another character/setting, or get a second adoption/rental (to start at the end of the first) - just tell them to let me know who it was that sent them.

The basic freebie is either a 1 character adoption of 2000 words running for six months or a 1 setting rental of 2000 words running for six months. With the boosting bonus it is possible to go up to the top offer for both of the adoption (3 characters, 4000 words a month, for six months) or the rental (3 settings, 6000 words a month, for six months). Plus, taking part in any giveaway will mean you can get a purchased adoption or rental for half price.

I'm also looking for more stops on my blog tour - the fourth story was posted here - so if you'd be interested let me know.
