The current issue of The Lorelei Signal is now out, with my story "On the Rocks." This is the first Torn World story that I've sold to an outside market. It shows Eshra as a young ranger in Itadesh, dealing with frisky snow-unicorn foals and a less-than-helpful partner. Then a fit of mischief turns into a much riskier situation, and Eshra must figure out how to save the precious filly.
The Lorelei Signal is a crowdfunded webzine. There are donation buttons where you can send money to the writer or artist of a given item, or to the magazine as a whole. If you can spare a little something, please show your support for this webzine that specializes in strong female characters.
This story started as a prompt I posted in Sketch Fest: "A Torn World scene in which a young snow-unicorn climbs a cliff like a goat would, while a horrified herder tries to coax it down."
ellenmillion drew a sketch based on that, which she later refined and inked. The scene inspired me to write "On the Rocks."

Giraffe Call Monday Update
Jan. 16th, 2012 09:42 amThe Giraffe Call is Still Open (and on LJ)! It will stay open until this Friday evening, or until I've written one prompt to ever prompter, whichever comes first.
Guys, I'm really excited at how close we are to the $150 incentive level! I'm bouncing up and down - and, I confess, I'm kind of curious to see if we can make it to the $201 level as well (not in the least because of the furnace bill, but I want to see how I handle a second Giraffe Call in a month, too). ;-)
As a reminder - if you donated to this call, or to any call, you can ask for ($x100) words of continuation on any story posted here. Several people from the December call have not yet claimed their words.

Regular visitors to mikaspace may recognize Lorelei the bespectacled bibliophile hedgehog. The first story book featuring the prickly little heroine has been available as a pdf ebook for awhile, but after several months of planning,
ego_sideways and I have begun a kickstarter campaign in the hope of funding a print edition.
We're happy to offer rewards to all our backers, including e-books (which will soon be available in iBooks and Kindle Fire compatible versions), signed first editions, Lorelei puppets, custom artwork, and author readings!
Dreamwidth won't let me embed a video without a paid account, so please click on the cover image for more info:

For those of you who prefer to try before you buy, you can also read the complete story online at http://www.edstbooks.com !
Feedback and signal boosting are greatly appreciated, so please check it out, even if you can't afford to donate!

2012 Rose & Bay Award Update
Jan. 16th, 2012 01:34 pmThis award recognizes excellence in cyberfunded creativity aka crowdfunding. Visit the 2012 Rose & Bay Award landing page for full details.
The nomination period is open through January 31, so we're halfway through that Here are the nomination posts for all six categories and their current numbers of nominations:
Art: 6
Fiction: 5
Poetry: 2
Webcomic: 2
Other Project: 4
Patron: 4
So far just a handful of nominations have come in. Ideally, I'd like to see the nominations surpass what we got in 2011, which were Art (6), Fiction (18), Poetry (4), Webcomic (11), Other Project (10), and Patron (12). Poetry and Webcomics are the lowest. Try looking for poetry book projects on Kickstarter or other hub sites if you need ideas. Webcomics are really popular and there's a list of archives on the nomination page. As for Patron, there are a lot of creators in this community -- if everyone would nominate at least one of their own patrons for their projects, this category would be thriving.
You can also help by boosting the signal. Post about the award and encourage your audience to come nominate projects.
