Yesterday's poetry fishbowl went fairly well; it had some ups and downs. I posted the opening a little earlier than usual, because we had to go out grocery shopping; we had a houseguest; and there was a community crisis that gobbled up another chunk of time. The total working time was probably just under nine hours. I found the interruptions distracting; they made it harder to keep my focus. On the up side, I'd been wanting to get a good poem to post today for the voters, and that was the very first one I wrote. "Which Is Stronger" has been quite popular, so I'm pleased with that. Within an hour of posting it, I had requests to make it publically available, so I opened it for donations at the usual price in case people want to sponsor it.

I wrote a total of 13 poems this time. Several were form poems; somebody got me on a ballad kick again. The freebie poem is "A Ballad for Tommy Douglas," about a famous Canadian. I picked that one because I wanted input on how well I did hailing somebody else's national hero; so far, feedback is positive, with 10 comments. All of these poems sprang from a single prompt, except for one about listening -- a topic requested by several people. There were 44 comments, a nice lively conversation; and 13 people sent prompts.

This month's donor is [livejournal.com profile] minor_architect. I'm also adding [livejournal.com profile] corivax as an honorary donor, for the glorious curvilinear artwork of my poetry. So far I've made $20. (A couple of other folks have expressed potential interest, but nothing else solid yet.) Their support and generosity is greatly appreciated. I'll need to figure out the poll for the generally funded poems. I also need to make a perk post for the donors.

Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! I will be checking my blog periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.

Feed the Fish!
Now's your chance to participate in the creative process by posting ideas for me to write about. Today's theme is civic poetry, which spans politics, sociology, civilization, and community. I am especially looking for:

  • characters

  • settings

  • current or historical events

  • cultural quirks

  • poetic forms

But anything is welcome, really. If you manage to recommend a form that I don't recognize, I will probably pounce on it and ask you for its rules. I do have the first edition of Lewis Turco's The Book of Forms which covers most common and many obscure forms.

I'll post at least one of the fishbowl poems on my blog so everyone can enjoy it.
