Here is a fascinating article about interactive storytelling, people's expectations, and where it might go.

From the chaos it arose,
Stretching out its tendrils,
Begging for more of what it had felt.
Fearful, we gave what we had.
More, it demanded, more!

When we had given everything,
And the being still hungered...
We did the only thing we could.
Series reboot!

The monster vanished into millions of particles,
Each one arguing with the rest.
Then we quietly re-established the old canon
And fired it off.

The monster formed a soldier
And marched along.

And as an aside, since much of the article discusses Mass Effect 3's ending, I have to say that the plural ending as it is released, DLC and all, embodies what I have very often felt is both the worst and most accurate of Greek tragedy:

In it, Fate is fixed, no matter the path you choose. No matter how you come to it, only one thing will happen.

In the spirit of fanfiction comes the sequel, examining the consequences of that choice; but the series is presumably over.

No matter what happened, Shepard has presumably died again. But the hero was resurrected before. How will it happen now?

Through the fans.
