I heartily approve of people doing things for themselves, especially if the government isn't doing enough. Crowdfunding is ... a way to do things on a larger scale than individuals can manage, not as formal as a government, but capable of taking up some slack for one that falls down on the job and doesn't fund stuff that should be funded.
