I am both a creator and a patron. Right now, mostly creator; almost everything I earn goes into supporting my household. Once in a while, I manage to shake out a bit of donation for a favorite project. If I had a spending budget, I'd be setting aside a certain amount each month for sponsoring projects. Eh, maybe someday we'll have a dayjob in the household again. Meanwhile I support my favorite projects by linking to them and talking about them.
It's the first time I've actually played with the poll coding. It took a bit of editing here and there.
As for myself, I'm not a wealthy man by any means, but I've a few dollars I can put here and there towards the stuff that I enjoy. Perhaps I might get enough creative juice going to try my hand at crowdfunded work myself some day.
Yeah, the LJ poll builder is less than wholly logical. I've crashed a few myself.

You make a big difference, at least to my project. This kind of thing is what makes crowdfunding awesome -- getting to meet cool people, and impacting what kind of creative material the world gets to see.

In regards to the LJ poll, I really had to fight the temptation to add the option "I'm a Hufflepuff." :P

... without whom the entire school would've torn itself apart. Oh wait, it sort of did anyway. *sigh* There would have been SO much less bloodshed if they'd put together a foursquare team like sensible heroes. But then it would've been over in one book instead of seven.
Bravo! This was an excellent idea! If enough people participate, the results should be quite interesting.
And I've dreaded the idea of trying to figure out how to post a poll, so thanks for both taking the initiative and being brave enough to battle the the LJ poll builder. ;)
Thanks! 'Course, as I was telling ysabetwordsmith, the biggest challenge I had making that poll was resisting the urge to add the option "I'm a Hufflepuff." XD
I'm so glad you posted this poll! I hope it reveals some good data, so we'll have a better idea of this how this community's membership breaks down: how many are primarily creators, how many are primarily patrons, and how many identify with both groups. (It might go a long way toward answering some questions I have about our demographics, too. :)
I think with 28 participants out of 270ish members, we are getting more of a look at the kind of people more likely to answer a poll than a good idea of what kind of people are reading. :)
Heh. Now I'm picturing a contestant on Fear Factor:
Host: "All right! You've bungee-jumped from a thirty-story bridge and stuck your head in a box of tarantulas! Now it's time for your final challenge..."
*dramatic music*
"...complete this Internet poll!"
Contestant: "AUGH! Nonono, anything but that! I quit, you can keep the money!"
Well, my reason for not filling out this poll is that I'm on the fence... dipped my toe into crowdfunding as a creator, and meaning to do more, but not really at the point where I'd say "I'm a crowdfunding creator".
I have tipped only on a very small number of projects, so I'm not even sure if I should consider myself a patron or fan.
If you've done it, you count. In case you were wondering about the patron thing, I can look at your username and remember not only that you've sent me money, but it was for the Muse Fusion rather than the Poetry Fishbowl.
Yeah, it's coming up with some interesting figures. I would've figured that the number of contributors (patrons, creator/patrons) would dwarf the number of creators, but here we have close to an even number. And most of the contributors, by far, are creator/patrons, another really interesting figure.
I am 'primarily' a creator and editor of both my spouse's and best friends stories. I was hoping that more people would like what we write but have come to the conclusion that the 'fan-base' is micro-cosmic. Thus, what we produce s primarily for our own amusement and legacy.
Much as I would like to 'delight an audience' with the creations the three of us produce, it has become a study in mental masturbation.
I do appreciate those who can make this work by appealing to a greater base that we are capable of.
I thank you for that. To make it easier for you my husband's (sordak) story is The Roman View and its sequel Titans' Travels (http://ladyqkat1.wordpress.com/), an alternate history set in ancient Rome. My best friend's (his sister, tashien) stories are in Other-wheres and Other-whens (http://ladyqkat3.wordpress.com/), an alternate universe series.
Thank you!
