My friend John R. Mabry, after submitting the first novel of a trilogy for publication quite a number of places, decided to make The Kingdom, the first book in the series available, free to anyone who wants to read it. By doing this he hopes to build enough interest to publish the remaining two books. He has been leaving hard copies in cafes and coffee houses all over the San Francisco bay area, and has provided a link to download the entire book as an epub or a pdf at:

On YouTube you can listen to John do a reading at the book’s release party:

Why might you like this novel?

Imagine a meeting between Maupin's Tales of the City and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And--oh yeah--the exorcists in this book are progressive Christian Friars living in Berkeley, CA. Here's the blurb about the novel:

"A thrill ride from beginning to end, THE KINGDOM combines the smart humor and horror of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' with the religious iconoclasm of Garth Ennis’ Preacher comic book series. The main characters are the Berkeley Blackfriars, and they are not your standard-brand priests—they swear like longshoremen and aren’t above the occasional spliff or one-night stand. But if you’ve got a nasty demon on your ass, they’re exactly the guys you want in your corner. In this, their first adventure, a magician summons a demon and commands it to swap his soul out with that of an angel. But the demon is surprised by his next command: when he goes, he must take an avocado with him. The magician then destroys the archetypal avocado, sending the world into a guacamole-deprived frenzy. When the Blackfriars are called upon to investigate they quickly discover that the magician was not working alone, and that avocados are not the only things targeted to disappear.... An utterly unique adventure, THE KINGDOM delivers fright, fun, and thought-provoking paradoxes at every turn."

Disclaimer: I was a beta reader for this novel, and hope it becomes more well known because I think it's a great story. And I want to read the other two books.

On January 15 there will be a raffle for a free tee shirt for anyone who posts a review of The Kingdom on either Amazon or GoodReads. See John's Facebook entry at:

I will be posting this on LJ in a few places, so you may see it more than once.
