I saw this earlier today and wanted to post, but I knew I'd be coming to a better point so I held off.
My current project is a large group "Wedding Picture". I am immigrating overseas for my marriage and there are therefore some pretty radial financial demands on us. Because of this, I am not having an actual wedding. I decided to throw some of that untapped matrimonial energy behind a fundraising enterprise. Participants gave donations ($25 for one character in the final image and $40 for a pair.) Then I stitched together an image that went on to include 40 dragons, gryphons, and various fanciful anthropomorphic critters.
There was a smaller donation option based on volunteer artists. If I had this to do over again I probably would not include that option as it made things a bit more complicated than they should have been. Secondly it didn't turn out that popular. We only had two people choose to donate $1-$24 while everyone else chose to be in the large image. I honored my obligation to draw in every artist who had volunteered to pick up the small donators, however.
Unfortunately it's not really a situation where I can bring new people in at this point, but I have to say I've enjoyed this creative process immensely. I am uncertain if this would fall under the domain of "Crowd Funding", but I would like to offer this sort of thing as a service or commission in the future. I guess it is a kind of Crowdfunding-by-proxy. The customer would receive the group image and participants would donate out of a desire to be included or as a present to the client. Thus, a client could afford a very large image like this without having to break the bank.
Without further ado...
Here is a link to the completed sketch. Beware, it's rather large. (http://pics.livejournal.com/allykat/pic/002tbg9e)
Here is a link to the journal tag in case you'd like to see the progress of this image so far. (http://allykat.livejournal.com/tag/crowdfunded%20wedding)
And finally, here is the gallery of my future husband, who will be rendering this image in full color digitally. (http://kittomer.gfxartist.com/)
I'd like to add as a closing note that while I have brainstormed and considered many ideas, this is the first crowdfunded project/fundraiser I have actually undertaken myself. I am immensely pleased thus far with the process. I also found that, for me, the choice of a project that would have a very defined beginning, middle, and end was a very good choice indeed. I took participants until I hit my "cap" and then proceeded from there.
