Fairyland, the Norton, and Us

crowdfundingSo, I wanted to let this wonderful community know that my crowdfunded project, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making is a finalist for the Andre Norton Award, which is basically the Nebula for YA books. It is a major award in speculative fiction.
We're trying to pull up the books, but are reasonably sure this is the first crowdfunded project to be nominated for a major award--but it can happen! These works are eligible for the Nebulas and Hugos, the biggest awards in the field. (I'm not sure about the World Fantasy Award)
I'll be talking a lot about crowdfunding in the next couple of months, and trying to direct some traffic here. But with all the talk of how we aren't given legitimacy and aren't eligible for awards, I wanted to tell you guys that at least for some of them, we are, and can even make it all the way to the final ballot.

We might consider making a post to record award eligibility: Awards that explicitly forbid crowdfunded projects, Awards that explicitly allow crowdfunded projects, and Awards that are exclusively for crowdfunding projects. What do folks think about that?

Date: 2010-02-19 10:17 pm (UTC)Most awards didn't start out counting electronic publication as different from self-publication, but more of them do so now -- and that's because early electronic publishers and authors said, "What we're doing is different; this is how and why it's different." I think we should do that with crowdfunding too. Plenty of people will refuse to acknowledge the distinction, but we may find some who go, "Gee, I never though of that" and let the crowdfunding in.
Also, only active members of SFWA can vote for the Nebulas, and Worldcon members for the Hugos, which I also think is important to note in such a post--who the voting audience is.<<
If you want to list extra details like that, sure, go ahead.
