[identity profile] ysabetwordsmith.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] crowdfunding
A proposal has been made to change this community's name from [livejournal.com profile] cyberfund_creat (based on the term "cyberfunded creativity") to "crowdfunding" (based on that term). The results of this poll will determine whether we keep the current name or change to the new one. Below are some pros and cons for each option that various folks have mentioned (if you have more, they can be added).

Current Name: [livejournal.com profile] cyberfund_creat

Pros include:

No cost.

No effort.

Established recognition; some people have been using and promoting this community under its current name for quite a while. It has built up awareness in people's minds so they recognize it when they see it.

Some outside articles use the term "cyberfunded creativity" and/or link to the community under its current name.

The term "cyberfunded creativity" specifies the online use of communal financing, so is more precise for what we are doing here.

Cons include:

The current name is split and truncated because "cyberfunded creativity" doesn't mesh perfectly with LiveJournal community name parameters. Some people say this makes it difficult to remember and use in posts, which is not good for promotion.

Some people find the term "cyberfunded creativity" and/or the shortened community name to be confusing. This is also bad for promotion.

The term "cyberfunded creativity" is long; the current community name is choppy. Some people find these awkward to pronounce and use.

The current name has little or no mainstream usage. Some people feel that it has less recognition than "crowdfunding" would have.

Proposed New Name: crowdfunding

Pros include:

The term "crowdfunding" has emerged in mainstream media as a business model that includes what we're doing here. That could give us recognition among a much wider potential audience.

LJ offers a forwarding service so that links to the old community name would lead people to the renamed community.

As a community name, "crowdfunding" should fit the LJ parameters with no modification. This would make it easier to remember and use online, benefitting promotion in posts.

Some people find the term "crowdfunding" clearer and easier to understand.

The term and community name "crowdfunding" would be shorter and easier to pronounce and use.

Cons include:

It would cost $15 to change the community name. (However, someone has offered to cover the fee, so this is not an obstacle.)

It would require someone to go through the steps of changing the name. Since I'm not sure I could jump through all the hoops effectively, that means someone else would need to volunteer as a community maintainer and do this.

The term "crowdfunding" and matching community name would not have exact parallels in older articles and other references, which would somewhat reduce the name recognition from those sources and the momentum built up by previous use.

Although "crowdfunding" includes what we're doing here, it does not specify online venues as "cyberfunded creativity" does, so is broader and less precise.

Members of this community are strongly encouraged to vote in this poll, as it will have a significant effect on the community for promotion and reference. (People will still be free to use the terms "cyberfunded creativity" and/or "crowdfunding" according to their preference, but whatever the community name will be is what everyone will need to use in links and descriptions.)

I'm torn. I like Cyberfunded Creativity because it has "creativity" in it. And I think that's vital to what this community is about; you can "crowdfund" non-creative endeavors. I don't want to lose that part of the focus.

I'd have no problem with going to crowdfunded creativity, for instance. But that's clearly too long for a community name...

On the other hand, getting more attention could happen from using the word more people know.

However people vote, I suggest that we all use both words in tags and other spots where that wouldn't be too wordy.

We can still put the word Creativity in the title of the community... it just doesn't fit in the community name/url (it doesn't fit now, which makes sharing the URL awkward. I often forget where the cut-off is).

I've jumped through the hoops of LJ-renaming before, so I'll volunteer to help with that part if the vote tallies up to rename the community.

For the sake of Other. I just today created a sister community on Dreamwidth. I called it Crowdfunded.
