I like

nanya's work, so when she wrote about taking commissions to pay for her art supplies, I asked her if I could pay her a little to continue work on an older piece of hers I wanted to see finished.

Spreading the meme!

(As an aside, here's the piece I sent her money to continue working on... if you like it, maybe you can drop her a buck or two also!)

Riffing off this, I wish I had more money ... I'd be tempted to chip in $1-2 for sketches of yours that I'd really love to see finished as paintings. I know you track comments to gauge popularity; if people were chipping in purely spontaneous donations for sketches, you'd have a way to track the ones that are so popular they're already fundworthy.

Riffing still further, this might could be a way to help writers finish fiction projects, too. Some people join a project community because it's easier for them to finish if they have outside encouragement. Donations from readers might help create enough interaction and sense of obligation (and groceries!) to keep them going.

elusivetiger and I were just discussing this... I am thinking I'm going to set up a page with the top 5 "finish this one!" images (in terms of how many people said 'finish this' in email or in the comment database) and then tagging how much time it would take for me to finish each (and to what stage of completion) and how much money it would take to "sponsor" the image.

Possibly, also, if you sponsor a great deal of it, you get perks: maybe if you sponsor a small part you can get free shipping on a print, half of it you can get a giclee when it's done, and sponsor the whole thing you will have bought the original.

Also consider some donor perks that wouldn't cost you anything, so could be extended to everyone who donates toward art like this. I do a special donor-locked post each month after my fishbowl, where I give extra details on poetry or some other interesting topic. Another possibility would be to list the names of all your art donors, the way you do for the Aphorisms and Admonishments.

It's slowly coming together... it's why I'm setting up Stardancer to require user logins, because I want to be able to unlock perks to patrons who have donated. They can come to the website and, say, see special images I'm not willing to share with everyone, read my notes on stories or my thinking on images I'm developing, see higher resolution images, or get extras like being able to read the Ai-Naidari lexicon.

dracosphynx has been indispensable in setting up this system and helping me begin to move the business model that way.

I never thought it would be possible, but I can almost see a time where I won't have to go back to part-time or full-time work after the baby goes to school, because this will actually give me enough money to justify doing it. The idea is mind-boggling.
