Any suggestions on good crowdfunding sites? What are the pros and cons of the ones you know? Have you had good or bad experiences with Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Rockethub, or any others? (I do see the directory linked earlier in this comm, but it offers only limited information on each site.)

And what sites are good for personal rather than artistic or business reasons? I've heard of GoFundMe. Are there others? Anything that doesn't take a cut (or only a minimal one) for people in dire financial straits?

I have an extensive guide to host sites which lists some of their features. It's not always easy to figure out the parameters of a crowdfunding site from its web description, so I suggest that you make a list of several promising ones and then research them carefully.

I'm glad I could help. I hope you find a site that works for you.

Well, I gotta say, if it's not Kickstarter or Indiegogo, I'm highly unlikely to contribute to a campaign, because I'm really tired of making accounts on yet more websites.

Some people overlap multiple crowdfunding sites. Most seem to prefer one or two. Therefore, some are bridges between audiences, but each crowdfunding site has a significantly different pool of potential donors. They don't all like the same stuff!

It is prudent to research sites to see what is popular where, and compare that to your project. Also, if you have an audience already, ask where they crowdfund. [personal profile] anke is right: plenty of folks won't want to add another account.
