(Hi folks! It's my first time posting to this community, so I hope I"m following protocol, and that this project is appropriate for the group.)

My family is helping to raise money for the Toj Chan School in rural Guatemala. People in our area who are from Toj Chan have already raised money for - and completed - two projects for their relatives/community still in Guatemala. They raised funds to build a road to their village and build a small school house. Now they're hoping to raise $1,000 to buy school supplies for students at the school (books, notebooks, writing utensils, etc.). With a school and the right supplies, children in Toj Chan can get some of the educational opportunities that many in this country take for granted.

If you like to garden (or know someone who does), they're raising funds through a thing called Flower Power fundraising. (Basically, if people buy fall bulbs 50% of the money goes directly to the school, and the bulbs are mailed straight to your home).

Any donations, large or small, will help! Also, any further shout-outs of this message would be great!

This post by [info]haikujaguar sparked an interesting discussion both on LJ and out of it (here is a link to the related thread on Kindleboards).

One thing some indipendent writers mentioned is trawling art galleries for already-made art available for licensing as cover, which can be
frustrating and time consuming for both the writer and the artist

One of the comments to the original post proposed a communal gallery offering only art licenseable for covers. Ideally such a site would be
searchable by genre, price, artist name and, possibly, available rights.

I have posted a poll  to gauge interest in such a possibility, please weight in and spread the word.

Sorry for reposting, but the editor ate the previous post, if you had already voted, be so kind as voting again, thanks!

Strange Horizons is having a fundraiser.  This weekly speculative fiction magazine is largely crowdfunded in this fashion. Donors get prizes -- things like books and artwork by the authors and artists of Strange Horizons.  I've had several poems published in this magazine, though nothing recently.
