PART 1 of THE CITY series: CUBISM IS SO SUPERANNUATED
George Cuvier is the legendary superhero Iguanodon, his normal alter-ego being the rich lackadaisical man who wears couture because it's proper and lets his butler keep a bear around because it's easier not to argue. As Iguanodon he is in a constant heroic struggle against the villainous Carnivora, this manipulative evil-doer who seems to steal signatures from everyone and never develops his own schtick.

But of course, Carnivora's alter-ego is really Étienne Hilaire, Cuvier's best friend from childhood. And of course, instead of bad-guying it up all the time he tends to spend manic bursts of energy mooning over Cuvier and pestering him for a reaction.

Cuvier doesn't really care if his arch-enemy isn't dedicated. He isn't dedicated either. He'd rather collect collections from other government mandated Supers than tromp out to get another bus thrown at his head.

Regardless of all this, they're both rather popular. Little boys adore Iguanodon! Girls shriek at the name of Carnivora! So when the Mayor of The City, Paul, is mysteriously in absentia and trouble by way of Alternate Universes, rogue tech from the University, and poor citizens sprouting tentacles from their eye sockets start to happen, the two men have to get involved. Despite their adamant disinterest.

Humorously slanted and full of every sci-fi/fantasy trope there is with the intent of playing it straight, this is a story about doing your job, dealing with the repercussions, and possibly developing a concoction that takes care of the tentacles problem. (WITHOUT driving the hosts of said tentacles mad during, please and thank you.)

The campaign for Cubism is so Superannuated is on-going, and the end goal is still off in the distance somewhere. Wandering around. Ignoring the deadline at the end of the month and muttering to itself.

If superheroes, tropes, poking fun at art history and paleontology and magma wombats are something you might enjoy, please have a look at the campaign and possibly tell your friends about it! Getting the word out is fairly important at this point (...actually, it's always been important, but let me pretend) and my friends are pretty much tapped out now. Help! Spread the word! Tweet about it!

And as always, if you've got a dollar or two to spare, and you want to see this book edited and out with your name attached in the acknowledgements, please chuck them at the campaign. You can throw as hard as you want to. It won't hurt it. I think.

(please note: there's still one death left on the perks list. if being horribly destroyed by a fictional character is your thing, you might want to check it out!)

I'm intending to have the final product out, ready for consumption sometime this September, so the monies will definitely help keep that goal in the "possible" range.

Thank you!

Hello! Here to share my latest venture into the crowdfunding arena! It's quite terrifying, oh wow.

My IndieGoGo Campaign for the novella Cubism Is So Superannuated is now live! The story is about superheroes, as many tropes/cliches that I can fit in and still have fun, and some menacing mean man in the background. It's all very menacing. And mean.

Linked on the campaign page is the first five thousand words of the story, so anyone looking will know what they're getting into! It's all about knowing that, or so I'm told.

The funding is to go for editing services -- lots.. of editing services.. -- a (pawnshop special) laptop that isn't going to die like the one I've got, and to pay my webhosting bill that has all the needed self-published webauthor platform stuff.

I'm an experienced author who hasn't tried very hard to be published the traditional route due to the length of my projects. They're always novellas. It's tragic, is what it is. My intention is to start publishing on Smashwords, but well, editing. It costs money. And I haven't got any, hah.

Please have a look if this appeals, and if you can, contribute! Or tell your friends, I'll take either, to be perfectly honest :)

[I hope this post is not too long for this group]

Hi everyone, from Clare Bell. I wanted to personally thank all of our 94 backers and I hope you're enjoying the art development sneak peeks and other perks. We just hit 50% funding on Kickstarter! You are helping me realize the very long-held dream of bringing the Named series to a new generation of readers and fans.

Today, electronic graphic technology has made people more visually-oriented than they were a generation ago, which is why we are moving into this new medium. We certainly intend to continue with the books, for those who have loved them. We also have pledged to keep the graphic novel as close as possible to Ratha's Creature, and any of the sequels we adapt.

I would also like to thank those who might not have been able to pledge at this point, but who have spread the word by contributing to the “Ratha's Challenge” art challenge gallery, or telling friends about the Kickstarter.

The Artist Dream Team, Sheila, and I are continuing work and publicity for the project, and here's what you will see in the upcoming days.:

Dani Long is penciling madly on Bonechewer, and doing video screen capture as she goes, so that we'll have footage for another video. She has already sent footage to Sheila, who is our video editor/creator.

Tod will also be coloring the Bonechewer model sheet and videoing as he goes, so that you can see how his process of watercolor and colored pencil works.

Sheila Ruth will edit the footage into a Bonechewer art creation music video. The Bard in Green, who composed music for the present Kickstarter video, also composed a Bonechewer theme, which we'll be using for the Bonechewer music video. We are hoping to have that up soon.

Dani Long and Tod Wills are completing Bonechewer and Fessran character model sheets, and we'll be doing public art posts from those, as we did with Thakur. Backers will get more art development sneak peaks, possibly including more video. If you enjoyed the peek at the process of developing Fessran, you should really like this.

Tod Wills (djinni on LJ) has an art show up in his hometown local cafe! He also has fliers with the sample art page picture and the Kickstarter link. If you are in the Seattle area, go see it!

I have done an “establishing shot panorama” storyboard for the first page of the graphic novel, and four more following panels that lead up to the sample page that you saw.

Lew Lashmit is painting the panorama based on the storyboard. He is fantastic with animal anatomy, light, coloring, and more, so I look forward to seeing what he does with this.

In between breaks from doing coloring on the model sheets, Tod Wills wants to do layouts based on these new storyboard pages. He's going to be one bizzzzy kitty if he does all that!

We are continuing to develop Ratha, the other Named cats, and the various prehistoric creatures in model sheets and comic pages.

If you're excited about this project, please spread the word on Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Fur Affinity, Deviant Art, and other sites. Make comments, do fan art, urge others to pledge, email friends, etc. If you are already a backer, please consider upping your pledge amount.

Many Ratha-licks and nuzzles,

Clare

Hi everyone,

I'm Clare Bell, (Rathacat), author of the Ratha or Named series. Many of you on LJ have read and enjoyed these books, starting with Ratha's Creature and its sequels

This year I am realizing a long-held dream: adapting Ratha's Creature, the First Book of the Named, as a graphic novel. I am working with three very talented artsts, including Djinni (Tod Willis) here on LJ.

I am on this community because ysabetwordsmith saw my new Live Journal post and suggested that Crowdfunding Community would be a good place to post updates about this. Below is an announcement with more info about the project:

The Ratha Graphic Novel project continues to bound along its trail, jumping into 2013 with new announcements and accomplishments.

I am very proud to report that the Kickstarter page is now live at :

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sheilaruth/rekindling-the-fire-rathas-creature-graphic-novel

Please help us realize the dream of a Ratha's Creature Graphic Novel by pledging on Kickstarter. You can also spread the word by sharing it on your social networks and blogs.

The artists ( Dani Long, Lew Lashmit, Tod Wills), Sheila Ruth, and I have been intensely involved in creating the various parts of this very critical portion of the project. These include the Kickstarter page text, a wonderful video, a striking sample character (Thakur) reference sheet, and an amazing sample graphic novel page, lettered and fully inked and colored. Every time I see this, I am knocked clean off my paws by the skill and dedication that everyone has showed in creating it!

This reinforces my belief that working with artists drawn from the Ratha fan community is working out well, far beyond our hopes. The unusual synergy and community I mentioned before continues to flourish, nurturing not only the participants but the spirit of the project. I hope this creative luminescence shines through via the Kickstarter page, encouraging interest, support and backing.

Our decision to choose three artists who could complement and back each other up has already shown that it was a wise choice. When one or more of the artists did experience a problem or disruption, another was immediately able to step in, minimizing delays, and smoothing out bumps in the trail.
This has given the project an unusual resilience and durability.

This ability was not confined just to the art. Everyone on the team jumped in with suggestions and ideas for the video, music, storyboards, the creation process and many other aspects. Before I release this latest announcement, I will be posting my draft on the Basecamp whiteboard site we use, expecting that it will be mercilessly and lovingly pummeled into a much better version.

I believe now more than ever that a team assembled in this manner, challenged and encouraged in the way we all have done, can grow an amazing maturity and strength that can bring it through adversity and complete high-quality work. This philosophy reaches out to the best in all involved. We are not only blazing a trail for developing the graphic novel itself, but for seeking the best possible way to mold and grow an alliance between exceptionally creative individuals. Again, I don't know of any other graphic novel that has been done in quite the same way (though, admittedly, there may be some).

Here is a list of the team's accomplishments so far:

Clare Bell has completely mapped out the story into rough storyboards.

We put out a call for art submissions, and selected the art team.

The entire team has begun collaborating, with an amazing synergy, using Basecamp as our online collaboration/project management tool.

The art team has been discussing big cat biology, prehistoric flora and fauna, California geography, characters, layout of the clan ground, and art techniques.

The team has made significant progress on developing character reference sheets.

Art tests to fine tune the techniques have been successful.

The team has done successful test runs of panel art created using our planned collaboration process, and based on the rough storyboards created by Clare.

Please visit the Kickstarter page and let us now what you think of it. We're pretty proud of it, and we hope you will enjoy what you see.

I also hope that the project catches the eye of an animation film company. I believe that the character designs are simple but striking enough to adapt well to 2 or 3D animation.

I will also be making more of an effort to post these progress updates on various sites every week at least (daily if possible), so keep watching!

Our theme this month was "military science fiction." (Guest themes of disability and crudity also appeared.) I worked from 11:45 AM to 4 AM on Tuesday, then a little more later in the week. That comes to 14 hours 15 minutes, allowing for my usual breaks; a new record. Prompts were a fairly steady trickle most of the day. I wrote 18 poems on Tuesday plus another 7 later on, and I still have notes for more in my series files. You-all were very generous with leading comments and questions this month. Yay, yay!

I had a good handful of form poems. Plenty of the poems combined prompts, though some are singles. The size ran long, with lots of epics. There was very little short or medium-short poetry.

Activity was okay this month, with 46 comments on LiveJournal. The 17 on Dreamwidth is a definite spike in activity there. Please welcome new prompters [personal profile] chordatesrock and [personal profile] wytchcroft. You have them to thank for the second freebie poem. Also [personal profile] chordatesrock has been very helpful in research and development for my new series An Army of One: The Autistic Secession in Space. *applause*

If you plan to sponsor some poetry but haven't made up your mind yet, read the list of unsold poems from January. That includes the title, length, price, and the original thumbnail description for the poems still available. The linkback poem "No Secrets" (One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis) still has one verse left; you can reveal that by linking to the unsold poetry list or to your favorite poem from this session.

All currently sponsored poems have been posted. I've sent backchannel copies of the rest to their respective prompters. Per the $200 goal, "Rigging the Game" (Path of the Paladins, from 12/4/12 fishbowl) is the free epic. The general fund polling is concluded. Per the $250 goal, there will be a bonus fishbowl on Tuesday, January 22 featuring the series Fiorenza the Wisewoman. Per the $300 goal, there will be a half-price sale in one series, to be bumped into February. You'll get to vote on that later.

The donor perk is "The Poetry of War." Donors this month include [personal profile] technoshaman , LJ user janetmiles, Anthony and Shirley Barrette. Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm.

I'm having another prompt session, this one a little different from the others.

(Taken from kajoneswriting.co.uk.) I’m looking for a number of different things. Names; personality traits; disabilities (both visible and invisible); song lyrics; pictures; short prompts (eg. yellow book or midnight lamp); and I may add more things as I think of them. Once I have a number of these I’ll put them into a randomiser, give them all numbers, and use them as a form of self-created bingo challenge. The reason I’m doing this is because I get inspired by lots of different things, I want to write more stories, and I think doing this will make it much more fun.

My plan is to write 500 words for every prompt I receive. For every link posted to this prompt session I’ll write another 500 words for a prompt of the linkers choice and write 500 words for a prompt/previously written story of my choice. If I receive ten prompts I’ll write 1000 words of a prompter’s story and then for every prompt after the tenth I’ll add another 500 words. (End)

Feel free to prompt here if you wish, or at the website, or at kajones_writing on either LJ or DW.

[personal profile] haikujaguar has just posted the first installment of "Earthrise." I've read an earlier version of this, and it's a lovely story. Romance, intrigue, space opera ... a lot of cool stuff that the mainstream publishers aren't much interested in. For everything else, there's crowdfunding. I've wanted to be able to share this with folks, for years, and now I can. Highly recommended.

[livejournal.com profile] fictobiology is a community for people who enjoy imaginary life forms. Read, write, draw, or otherwise explore ecosystems from other realities. I love this stuff. I especially love getting into fairly detailed territory with it, so for instance, I know about the digestive system of my Hailen centaurs and the aggressive reproduction of my Branchian aliens. Biology is weird. Weird is good.

Wow, it's been a long time since I posted here. For the last two months - maybe slightly more - I have been Internetless, so everything was put on hold. Now I have an Internet connection I'm having an auction of everything I sell at my website in an attempt to drum up some interest in the things I love most - character adoptions, setting rentals, and choose-your-own ebooks - as well as sell some more words.

In the last couple of days I've updated my donor perks and credits page, and made a start on the donor filter, and started posting some of my hundred stories (so far they're all stories I wanted to write and I plan on writing some more before turning to prompts if I need them). I'm going to spend the next two weeks, while the auction is running, focusing on writing and posting to the donor filter.

I hope to see some of you at my auction and remember if you can't donate you can always start collecting credits. :)

I have posted my Aether Dancer story, "Finding the Library," which features my character Sesha Fulbright. This is steampunk intrigue about the quest for freedom. It's in four parts, all posted now, beginning with Part 1 here. This is part of my ongoing effort to support their IndieGoGo fundraiser by boosting the signal and otherwise doing things to widen the fanbase for the project.
