[personal profile] eseme posting in [community profile] crowdfunding
Nominations are CLOSED. Thank you!

Fiction category of the Rose and Bay Award. This award honors excellence in creative crowdfunding, and this category recognizes superlative writing in the field of fiction, which includes both short form and novel length or serial stories. Everyone is encouraged to make nominations and, later, to vote. Icons and banners are available to help spread the word. Please read the complete details below, and then make your nominations in a comment on this post.

What Is the Rose and Bay Award?
The Rose and Bay Award focuses on a growing business model known as "crowdfunding" or "cyberfunded creativity," which directly connects creative people and patrons of the arts online. This award recognizes exemplary projects and enthusiastic patrons. It spans six categories: Art, Fiction, Poetry, Webcomic, Other Project, and Patron. (Other Project includes any cyberfunded creativity that isn't art, fiction, poetry, or webcomic -- or that spans more than one category.) The categories and their handlers are listed below:

Art: [livejournal.com profile] itew
Fiction: [livejournal.com profile] eseme
Poetry: [livejournal.com profile] xjenavivex
Webcomic: [livejournal.com profile] ysabetwordsmith
Other Project: [livejournal.com profile] xjenavivex
Patron: [livejournal.com profile] xjenavivex

The award period for eligible activities spans January 1-December 31, 2010.
The nomination period spans January 1-January 31, 2011.
The voting period spans February 1-February 28, 2011.

Award Rules
1) In order to be nominated, a project must be "cyberfunded creativity" aka "crowdfunding." That means it must be creative material marketed directly to an audience online, with money involved somehow. There are many variations of this business model; all are welcome; and if you're not sure a project qualifies, you may ask.

2) In order to be nominated, at least part of the project must be visible online without charge. If the project is normally visible only to paying subscribers or the like, and the creator wishes for it to be eligible, then s/he may offer temporary or partial access for voting purposes. (If the available material is temporary and/or partial, it needs to say that at the top of the screen, to avoid annoying visitors who might otherwise think they're about to see a complete piece.)

3) This award will go by calendar years. So in order to be eligible for this round, a project must have been active on or between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010.

4) For this round, nominations will be made in comments to this nomination post. A nomination consists of the project title, creator name, award category, a link to the project page, a sentence or few summarizing the project, and a section describing its crowdfunding approach. Example:

Project Title: Wonderful Webfic
Creator Name: A.J. Muse
Link: http://www.wonderfulFic.com
Category: Fiction.
Summary: "Wonderful Webfic is an established (June 2008-current) serial novel about three fairies and their ongoing attempts to fit into modern society. It updates twice a week on Mondays and Fridays."
Crowdfuding Approach: "This project is funded by donations; enough donations and an extra chapter will go up (usually on Wednesdays). Additionally readers may earn Wonderful Credits by posting reviews, spotting typos, and leaving comments or the author. These Credits may be spent to vote on which aspect of modern life the faeries will encounter next (I'm currently lobbying for a visit to the natural history museum - I am anticipating multiple comments from Cerana on what they humans got wrong). A.J. is planning a hardcover edition in the future, and there will be new fundraising and new perks associated with that in the new year."

5) You may nominate a maximum of three projects per category. You are not required to make that many nominations or to cover all the categories. Please make each nomination in a separate comment; that way, if a problem occurs with one nomination it will not affect any others. You may not nominate your own project; that's tacky.

6) Nominations for the Webcomic category will be collected by [livejournal.com profile] eseme.

7) Participation is voluntary. If a creator wishes to withdraw their project from any category, or a patron wishes to withdraw from the Patron category, simply contact the category handler. In case of withdrawal, the person who made the withdrawn nomination may then nominate another project or patron instead.

8) Voters are strongly encouraged (though not required) to browse the nominees before making a final decision; that's what the links are for, and the purpose of this award is to promote the splendor of crowdfunded projects. If you don't have time for that, better to vote on the ones you know than just skip the whole award.

9) Voting will take place via LiveJournal polling in this community, open to all. You may cast one vote per category. (There may need to be more than one poll question per category, and runoffs, if the number of nominees is high.) You may not vote for your own project, nor yourself as a patron; that's tacky.

10) Winners will be announced after the polling is completed. The winner of each category will receive a "Rose and Bay Award" certificate in recognition of their achievement.

Where To Find Fiction

While there is not yet a single website that focuses exclusively on crowdfunded projects, there are several that gather various types of web-based. If you want to participate in this award category but you're not sure what projects to nominate, look for places to browse through different projects so you can find some that you like. If your favorite hub site is not listed here, please send a personal message to [livejournal.com profile] eseme with the name and web address of the site. This list will be updated based on suggestions.

How You Can Help
As a relatively new award, Rose and Bay depends on your enthusiasm to make it a success. Here are some ways you can help that happen:

1) Make some nominations. Leave yours in a comment to this post, and watch for separate posts to appear for the other five categories.

2) Mark the voting period on your calendar. Make sure you come back to this community in February to cast your votes.

3) Promote the Rose and Bay Award by blogging about it, emailing your friends, posting it on social networks, or any other method you can imagine. Everyone is encouraged to spread the word as far as possible whether you are a creator, a patron, or a curious bystander.

4) If you're a patron or audience member, highlight your favorite crowdfunded projects from 2010 and direct people back to the award. Are you following other patrons whose tastes match your own to see what they sponsor or recommend? Mention them too! This makes it easier for people to find eligible nominees.

5) If you're a creative person, let your audience and patrons know which of your projects are eligible for the Rose and Bay Award, including a link to the relevant nomination page(s). Do you have an "honor wall" or other place acknowledging your patrons? Mention that too! Let your fans know there is a way for them to honor your project and the patrons who make it possible.

This post has been edited four times. Once to clarify that both a plot summary and crowdfunding information is needed in a nomination. The second edit added a seventh site with web fiction to the list of places to find fiction online. The third edit added a new rule (rule 7) to emphasize that participation is voluntary, and creators or patrons may withdraw their names form contention. The third edit also further clarified the crowfunding section of nominations, by making it a separate category. The fourth edit added text to rule 5 which asks that nominations be made in separate comments.

Umm ... I already did? The cut and paste of the sample form put them on the same line with the link. But here you go again:

Project Title: Tin Man
Creator Name: [livejournal.com profile] robling_t
Link: http://robling-t.livejournal.com/
Category: Fiction
Summary: Tin Man is a fantasy novel that was posted in 16 chapters, started and completed during 2010. It tells the story of the necromancer Robling Tremare, his golem (made from a suit of armor), and the bodyguard Liane Sharpshaft as they try to discover what destroyed the guild of Tremare. It's funny and sweet and tragic in various places, and the worldbuilding is among the most original and engrossing I have seen; you've never met a necromancer like Robling before. Supported by donations, and it had some fun discussions in the comments.

The project is supported by feedback from readers, fanfic, purchase of tie-in material (the World Tree sourcebook and the author's other books), and donations.

It usually updates two-three times weekly.

I nominate ...

Project Title: Wonder City Stories
Creator Name: Jude McLaughlin (aka Dreamwidth user wonder_city)
Link: http://wonder-city.dreamwidth.org/
Category: Fiction.
Summary: Wonder City Stories is a superhero soap opera serial. It involves dozens of characters and plotlines, including save-the-world adventures and romantic entanglements and so much more. This project is notable for its terrific diversity (strong women, people of color, queers, handicapped characters, etc.) and for its unflinching treatment of social issues (racism, sexism, domestic tension, politics, etc.).

The project is supported by donations, plus a Zazzle store with swag. Perk thresholds are sometimes money, sometimes comments or other participation. There have been polls asking what readers would like to see more of. Sometimes if you donate or boost signal you can ask for a reappearance of a favorite minor character. This project is also unusual in that the author occasionally responds to real-world news by writing a special episode dealing with the same social issue in the story's setting. It usually updates weekly, but has been running a twice-weekly pattern for the holidays, which can be extended if enough people comment.

This is my third and last nomination here...

Project Title: Strong Heart
Creator Name: Capriox Bovidae
Link: http://capriox.digitalnovelists.com/node/4
http://bovidae.livejournal.com/
Category: Fiction
Summary: Strong Heart is a sword & sorcery fantasy serial about the caravan guard Joa Na v'Fasainjd, who is dagha pavadkar (born with a female body, but so obviously a warrior as to be considered socially male). When Jo takes a guard job with a young wizard, the mercenary life leads to much adventure, well told. This story is supported by donations. Fans seem to be enjoying the revised version (it began on LiveJournal and has since moved and changed a bit); the move was crowdfunded.

You're free to edit, or write your own intro post, as long as the rules remain intact. You might also find it helpful to revisit the 2010 nomination posts (linked in the 2010 landing page) including the Fiction-specific one.

Folks, if the directions were unclear, that's my fault -- I drafted the original text. The summary is supposed to include something about the project's content, its crowdfunding model and audience interaction, and any other details you consider relevant. Some folks are just more long-winded than others; I usually add in why I like the project or what makes it special.

Okay...

I have changed the description slightly in the landing page rules, and will update my Webcomic post too. Now it says:
"A nomination consists of the project title, creator name, award category, a link to the project page, and a summary. The summary should include several sentences describing the project's content (theme, characters, plot, etc.), presentation (media, frequency, etc.), and crowdfunding approach (money handling, audience interaction, etc.)."

Hopefully this will clarify things enough to prevent further gaps. It's not necessary to have ALL the details, but we do need enough to peg a project as crowdfunding and have some clue what it's about.
