I really enjoy freelance editing because it lets me do more of one of my favorite parts: coaching writers to improve their craft. Plus the stress level is lower: I'm not caught between writer and publisher, I just work for the writer. I lay out my suggestions and the writer can choose which to follow.

I think more people are realizing this. As the market opens up, though, there will also be a demand for editors and reviewers to flag the stuff that is really worth reading. *chuckle* Not everyone shares our taste for rummaging through slushpiles.
