"Why would you (sew/bake/keep bees/can/whatever) when you can just buy that stuff?" Well, aside from it being enjoyable, it means that I can have stuff even if the world falls apart, I can't afford to buy it, no one sells what I want, etc. If you have the skills to do it yourself, it's a lot harder for the world to say you can't have a thing. In the context of Daughters of the Apocalypse, I'd love to see older survivors who were considered odd for these interests but are now highly coveted for their life skills.
