topullamuk (verb) – In Whispering Sands use, means “to limp for now,” or more generally, “to favor an injured or otherwise unfit body part because using it normally hurts.” This is a temporary condition; the term for a permanent disability is tōpulamuk (“to limp always”). The phrase shahesh topullamuk (“heart limps”) is a painfully evocative term for emotional damage; it conjures up the image of a horse with a sharp stone wedged in its hoof, something very poignant for desertfolk. It’s rather like the English “heartsore.” Note that the accent in topullamuk falls on the third syllable, dragged there by the “ll” phoneme. “That limps” is desert slang for bad news, similar to English “that sucks.”
