A friend tipped me to this campaign: Take Us North is a video game about migrants trying to cross the border into the United States of America. elf boosted the signal for a friend's project, The Fujoshi Guide to Web Development. "Help us put the means of website production back into the hands of those best suited to receive them: fandom people."

"Learn web development from hot anime guys in a dating sim. Well, not actually a dating sim. But it looks like a dating sim."

Here is a sample of the GIT Zine. (Do not read with mouth full.) This looks like a great guide for visual thinkers, even in its early, sketchy stage. It is even legible for me, and I don't code. Also, decorating an instruction manual with hawt catboys will definitely make fans look at it.

I am delighted to see someone doing concrete things to encourage more folks to create websites and services, as alternatives to the current ones that mostly suck. Take back the web!

Also, promoting this project may help us get things that we want. The more people know how to make websites, the more likely it becomes that someone will create a crowdfunding hub site that hosts all types of projects, rather than just being a storefront or just hosting one type. Several times, we've talked here about how to set up such a thing, and the leading reason it's never gone farther than talk is that nobody interested in it knows how to build the kind of website for it.

Recent lurker here, and a long-time creative force of nature. I'm an actor and emerging filmmaker out of Toronto, Canada who makes entertaining and forward-thinking women-led films and theatre content.

The Many Worlds

With work going well, albeit slowly, on the Many Worlds I have a new goal for the Patreon. I'd like to be making $50 a month by the end of the year, as that will give me a tiny bit of extra time to be able to write more for me, as all of my time and energy has been going into ghosted work.

I've been editing the next part of Case of the Counterfeit Enchantments, so that should be going up at some point in this week. Along with this I've been going through some other stories, trying to get a bit more in depth with the world building, and it's been interesting. There are some things I've got no idea what was coming next, which will make it even more fun to write.

Should I reach $50 then I hope to be able to get back to doing semi-regular prompt calls. I'm probably going to start off by season, and slowly build up to more. If I get more than $50 it'll be even easier to put more time into writing.

There is also the Ko-fi if you'd like to help me out, but not pay a specific monthly amount.

The Many Worlds Update

It's been a long time since I posted here, and I think the last time I did it was probably with my old account (k_a_webb). The last year has been complicated, to say the least, but things are slowly becoming more normal. Making a long story very short my long term partner had some incredibly complicated mental health issues. That doesn't mean things are exactly easier, as, although he has got through the worst of it all, there are still problems. However I am working on getting back to the Many Worlds after not having the time or the energy to for a long time.

The website has had a change - it's now The Many Worlds. I also have my Patreon, and I'm over on Ko-Fi. For now things are going slowly. I'm working on editing some of the older stories I have, planning out new things, and just getting back to writing on a regular basis (for the Many Worlds, rather than just clients). It's nice to be working on them again, as I have missed them.

It's been a while since I posted here, so I wanted to write a quick update, to let anyone who does read my work know what's going on. There has been a recent mass update. Almost everything that was finished has now been posted. I am still working out a world for one story I want to go up, and I kept a couple back to give me something to post this week. I also do still have Case to post, but that's probably going to be something to do this weekend - as well as finishing off the current book. Then I'm going to decide how to finish off the story.

This mass update means there are a lot more stories to read. I've been working a lot on getting things finished, and trying not to start too many new things... only plot bunnies are mean. :D Some continuations are also being written, because I do know how things are meant to go, but, like I'm sure is the case for everyone, finding time to get everything done is more complicated. I do, as I always did, have my tip jars up, so if you do enjoy reading what I write donations are appreciated. I also have a subscription page, if you want an easy way to give me a monthly donation.

When it comes to the plans I have for the website I am interested in doing a number of things. One of those things is putting up audio for the stories, even though I absolutely hate the sound of my own voice when it's recorded, because I really want the stories to be as accessible as possible. Along with that I am planning on getting some ebooks done, although that's going to take longer. When it comes to the ebooks I want them to have fully completed story lines in. Then I also want to get working on some basic maps. I need to know where things are, especially with some of the more complicated worlds. Along with that I'm thinking of trying out some of my own artwork, which may or may not happen.

Crowdfunding Creative Jam Landing Page

This landing page presents information about a recurring activity in this community, including the general parameters, past sessions and themes, etc. The Crowdfunding Creative Jam is held about once a month here in crowdfunding. This provides a regular opportunity for people to post prompts, claim prompts, post things they've created, sponsor goodies, explore each other's projects, collaborate, and generally hang out with other creative folks.

For background, you can read the original discussion posts ("Creative Jam, Anyone?" and "Further Discussion of the Creative Jam") and the parameters poll. See a list of themes.

About the Creative Jam
The Crowdfunding Creative Jam customarily takes place on the third weekend of the month. It can run Saturday-Sunday or Sunday-Monday, depending on the preferance of that month's manager. Any member of the community can volunteer to manage the jam session.

Everyone is eligible to post prompts, which may be words or phrases, titles, images, etc. Prompters may request a specific creator, but everyone else may still use that prompt if they wish. Prompts may specify a particular character/world/etc. but creators may use the prompt for something else anyway and post the results. Prompters are still encouraged to post mostly prompts that anyone could use anywhere, as this maximizes the chance of having creators make something based on your prompt. Please title your comment "Prompt" or "Prompts" when providing inspiration so these are easy to find.

Prompt responses may also be treated as prompts and used for further inspiration. For example, a prompt may lead to a sketch which leads to a story, and so on. This kind of cascading inspiration is one of the most fun things about a collective jam session.

Everyone is eligible to use prompts, and everyone who wants to use a given prompt may do so, for maximum flexibility of creator choice in inspiration. You do not have to post a "Claim" reply when you decide to use a prompt, but this does help indicate what is going on so that other prompters can spread out their choice of prompts if they wish.

Creators are encouraged, but not required, to post at least one item free. Likewise, sharing a private copy of material with the prompter is encouraged but not required. Creative material resulting from prompts should be indicated in a reply to the prompt, with a link to the full content elsewhere on the creator's site (if desired); a brief excerpt and/or description of the material may be included in the reply (if desired). It helps to title your comment "Prompt Filled" or something like that so these are easy to identify. There is no time limit on responding to prompts. However, creators are encouraged to post replies sooner rather than later, as the attention of prompters will be highest during and shortly after the session.

Some items created from prompts may become available for sponsorship. Some creators may offer perks for donations, linkbacks, or other activity relating to this project. Check creator comments and links for their respective offerings.

Prompters, creators, and bystanders are expected to behave in a responsible and civil manner. If the moderators have to drag someone out of the sandbox for improper behavior, we will not be amused. Please respect other people's territory and intellectual property rights, and only play with someone else's characters/setting/etc. if you have permission. (Fanfic/fanart freebies are okay.) If you want to invite folks to play with something of yours, title the comment something like "Open Playground" so it's easy to spot. This can be a good way to attract new people to a shared world or open-source project, or just have some good non-canon fun.

Boost the signal! The more people who participate, the more fun this activity becomes. You can link to this landing page, or to individual session posts, to encourage more folks to get involved.

There are a number of shared worlds, open-source fandoms, and other projects which are open to new creative input. If you want to explore a creative endeavor that already has resources such as setting and characters, check out these options ...

The Blueshift Troupers
Imagine a science fiction television series with all the hope, adventure, and sense of wonder from the classics. The hiveship Omphalos is one of the regular characters, providing a home for the crew of shapeshifters who travel the galaxy through jump gates to solve problems on distant planets. Human colonization has spread civilization far and wide, but most planets have one or a few dominant races and some of them are pretty xenophobic. Each season of the show features a different planet, ethnic group, and culture where the main characters would be portrayed by new actors. This would create a shifting opportunity for large numbers of ethnic actors on film or stage; in its current version, it's a way for authors or artists to portray different races and cultures. The main page linked above presently holds a description of the setting and main characters along with links to published works.

Nine for the Nebula's Heart
This is envisioned as a movie or movie series which is science fantasy mythpunk with feminist/intersectional themes. The main characters are diverse along lines of race, sexuality, social background, ability, etc. but the team is all women except for one man. You can read the core canon, guidelines, and masterlist of works online. Anyone may create new works using these materials, but in order to count as canon, works must use the same CC BY-SA license as the core.

Schrodinger's Heroes
Everyone is welcome to play with Schrodinger's Heroes. (If you're new to this project, you can start here.) This is an imaginary fandom for an apocryphal television show. A team of heroes practice quantum physics and other hijinks to protect Earth against invaders from other dimensions. The team is racially, sexually, and culturally diverse. Because the subject naturally deals with alternate realities, it lends itself well to crossovers and alternate-universe interpretations; you can use my version or make up your own.

Torn World
Torn World is a science fantasy shared world available for writing and creating in. Sea monsters! Giant furred unicorns! Crystals that control time! People of changing gender, or no gender! For more information about the setting, prompters should start here and contributors should start here. For specific information about submitting your work to our world continuity, rights and allowances, please see our contributor's rules. We have a space for sharing non-canon work on our site, so don't be shy about jumping in, even if you aren't familiar with the setting yet!

The Ursulan Cycle
Based on the Arthurian Cycle, the Ursulan Cycle uses genderbending to tell old legends in new ways. Most of the characters are female, which changes the relationships and politics dramatically. Themes include court intrigue, adventure, romance, and magic/spirituality. Everyone is welcome to play since it's based on ancient cultural material. Come explore the characters, plot, macguffins, and content.

Story Hospital is an advice column published on four Tuesdays a month. Each column answers a writer's question about their work in progress. These columns are focused on the craft and practice of writing. I don't tell you how to get an agent or quit your day job; I get right into the heart of the relationship between the author and the work.

I am very nervous and excited! :D I've never done a Patreon thing before. And this project relies heavily on people sending in questions--if they don't do that, I'm kind of sunk. But people are becoming patrons already, and tweeting lots about it (I unlocked my Twitter account so that my announcement tweet could be retweeted), and I am optimistic.

An Update

It's taken me far too long to realise I was trying to square peg myself. When I first started crowdfunding I seemed to find the best way of working, which was to write longer stories in parts, but as time passed I found myself trying to make myself work in a different way. Instead of letting me be who I am as a writer I was trying to follow a path that was never going to work. The more I tried to follow that path the harder it was for me to write, because I was trying to become a different type of writer, and I know why I was doing it - I felt like my way wasn't the right way. For some reason it's taken me a year to come to the conclusion that everyone is different. When I'm ghostwriting I write the way I need to, but it never feels natural. It's something I have to do in order to pay the rent. When I write my own work I can write the way that feels right to me, rather than the way that doesn't, and if I hadn't been writing, mostly, for self-publishers, I probably wouldn't have done this.

What I've come to realise is that I'm not, naturally, a self-publisher. I'm naturally a crowdfunded. I find it easier to write if I'm moving between worlds, and characters, and letting stories be as long as they need to be. I find it easier to write if I'm doing what feels right to me, instead of trying to walk a path that isn't mine to walk. Maybe this path is the one that means I won't be earning anywhere near as much as the self-publishers, but that doesn't matter. This has never really been able the money. It's been about writing. What I need to get back to is enjoying the writing, because if I'm enjoying it them I'm writing more. Yes, I would like to earn an income from it, but that's not going to happen if I don't start publishing regularly again, and that's not going to happen if I don't enjoy writing.

So, once the end of this month is over, I'm going to be getting back to writing regularly for the website, and I'm going to do it my way. I'm going to be myself, for the first time in far too long, and my aim is to be posting at least 5,000 words a week. The main focus will be the incomplete stories, Case (which I'm in the process of sorting into smaller parts, because it's become far larger than I ever thought it was going to be, and that's due to the characters being who they are), and I am going to be posting some stories for the novella worlds I was working on, because those worlds are ones I want to be writing for. I just don't want to try to constrain them when I know how I write best. If you have any favourites you'd like me to focus on let me know. That will help, because then I know what to focus on first, although I do have some ideas.

There have also been some changes made at the website. The collections are almost entirely sorted - they're in order, I just need to change the titles of some stories, and then it'll be done. I've updated the Guide, and included the downloads for the ebooks, which aren't perfect, but they are done. I'm planning on updating them to collection 2 in April/May next year. For the first time in a long time I'm feeling like I can write again.

Our theme this month was "gentlemen in distress." I worked from 12:30 PM to to 4:30 AM, so about 14 hours accounting for breaks. I wrote 9 poems on Tuesday and another 19 later.

Our theme this month was "gentlemen in distress." I worked from 12:30 PM to to 4:30 AM, so about 14 hours accounting for breaks. I wrote 9 poems on Tuesday and another 19 later.

There was good participation, with 49 comments on LiveJournal and 43 on Dreamwidth. A total of 22 people sent prompts. Please welcome new prompters DW user Liliane and starcat_jewel. You have them to thank for the second freebie.

(Do I tag this as 'kickstarter' even though it's an Indiegogo? There is no 'indiegogo' tag. I am confused.)

New Crowdfunding Project: "Magpie Monday"

I'm thrilled to announce that Dreamwidth user Dialecticdreamer has launched her own crowdfunding project, Magpie Monday, to be held the second Monday of each month. Reply with prompts and get at least a page of prose privately, or a poem if you prefer. Signal boosts extend the length of your fill. Further perks are available too. Portrait Adoption upgrades, and next Sketch Fest

The new and greatly improved Portrait Adoption has launched!

Whether you're a role-player or a writer, there is something magical about getting a portrait that is just for your character. Less magical is the traditional process of commissioning an artist. Let's be honest, artists can be slow, flaky, and sometimes their vision just doesn't quite line up with yours, even when they are honest and mean well (which isn't always the case!). It's rare to find someone who hasn't been disappointed hiring an artist.

Portrait Adoption takes all the guesswork and risk away.

February marks our eleventh anniversary. For eleven years, we've been providing pre-finished portrait adoptions. Dozens of talented artists offer a wide array of styles and options, and many hundreds of orphaned portraits have found homes through our service. We've come a long way from our two-artist launch, and we're celebrating with an amazing upgrade to our site.

What's New?

With hundreds of portraits to pick from, it can be challenging to find the portrait you're looking for. New search tools allow you to pick features and options that will allow you to zero in on the face you've got in mind. Do you want to find all the females with long, straight, dark hair and green eyes? Do you want to see all the human men, but not the ones with beards? Do you want to see only the portraits that have customization, or originals, as an option? It's a simple as using our new comprehensive search page.

And what's that? Originals? That's new, too: artists may now offer their original traditional artwork through the site. You'll get a web adoption through the Portrait Adoption site, and the artist will ship you the original piece. (Ah, yes, there is a little risk with this option - but at the very minimum, you will have the digital image and adoption rights, and I am very firm with artists who don't live up to their obligations.) Originals are marked with a gold star.

Customization has gotten a major upgrade, too. Not only does a portrait tell you what customization options are available, now you can easily send the artist notice of your interest and put the piece on a temporary claim while you wait to hear back from them. No need to try hunting down their contact information or try to google their webpage if they don't have it listed, only to find that the portrait you wanted them to adjust was adopted while you waited! Look for the pencil icon on these portraits.

Still can't find the portrait you're looking for?

We are taking submitted descriptions! Submit your character description for all of our artists to consider drawing. There is no obligation to adopt, and a good chance you'll get several portraits to choose from. You can see some of the pieces created for submitted descriptions in the newly rebuilt sample gallery.

Don't forget that you can watch an artist you love, too - sign up for their watchlist, and you'll receive an email when they have new work approved!

Your character deserves the perfect portrait. Portrait Adoption is here to provide it.
