Most awards didn't start out counting electronic publication as different from self-publication, but more of them do so now -- and that's because early electronic publishers and authors said, "What we're doing is different; this is how and why it's different." I think we should do that with crowdfunding too. Plenty of people will refuse to acknowledge the distinction, but we may find some who go, "Gee, I never though of that" and let the crowdfunding in.
Also, only active members of SFWA can vote for the Nebulas, and Worldcon members for the Hugos, which I also think is important to note in such a post--who the voting audience is.<<
