These things take practice. It's a lot easier to do one step at a time than a big list all at once.

If you put a donation button on your profile page, it will not be in anyone's face, but it will be easy to find for anyone who goes looking.

Read the "how to boost your audience" post, it has plenty of tips. I suggest that you try one thing at a time. Polls are fun and easy, especially if you start with something like "What is your favorite post/theme/etc. in this project so far?"
